After 3 trips to this city I have developed a good idea of the best food to eat in Rome. Each region in Italy has different “signature” dishes. However, Rome is the capital city which means you can get your hands on almost anything. On every trip to Rome I discover something new. Scroll down for a more detailed description of some of the food I have tried in Rome (pictured above).
1. I tried Ravioli which was very nice. The restaurant owner told me they cook the pasta fresh daily and you could really feel this with the taste.
2. The restaurant owner gave me a free tiramisu with my food, and you could also tell this was freshly made.
3. Gnocchi (potato dumplings) with pesto. I tried this at Ristorante Carlo Menta with some people I met from an Airbnb walking tour.
4. I tried cannoli for breakfast once. These are like a crispy tube filled with ricotta or pistachio cream. I always assumed they were soft before trying them, so it was a shock to take a bite and find out they were hard and crispy.
5. Spaghetti alle vongole has always been one of my favourite Italian dishes. It includes spaghetti with garlic and clams.
6. carciofi alla giudia are fried artichokes. These are an Italian Jewish speciality from Rome. It was my first time ever trying an artichoke and I really liked the taste.
7. Gelato is everywhere in Italy. The one in this photo is pistachio flavour. Pistachio and Amareno are usually my favourite flavours to order in Italy.
8. I had a caprese salad for brunch one afternoon. This simple salad includes tomato, mozarella, and basil. It resembles the Italian flag with the colours.
9. On my first ever day in Rome I had a pizza for lunch. It had mushroom and sausage as toppings. Pizza in Italy tends to be bigger than your whole head. In England, we usually share 1 pizza between multiple people, but in Italy, each pizza is for an individual person.
