My first trip to Belgium led me to discover that Belgian food is amazing! I never knew how good the local cuisine was until I did a food tasting tour in Brussels.
So, chocolates are one of the things that Belgium is famous for as we all know. Surprisingly I didn’t bring back chocolate from this trip. The picture above shows a rather interesting type of chocolate from my food tour. It’s a champagne truffle and tasted absolutely divine.
Moving on to the good stuff…beer. Now I always assumed it was Germany that was the most famous European country for beer. Clearly I was wrong because Belgium has over 200 different flavours and brands of beer. I took advantage of this and brought back chocolate, coconut, cherry, and mango flavoured beer. The top picture is from Bruges Beer Museum…and I couldn’t finish all 3. The bottom left picture is from a food tasting tour at a Belgian pub. The bottom right picture is from my first evening in a local restaurant.
And finally the food! I seriously underestimated Belgium before I got there. The food was amazing which is why I feel the need to create this blog post. Starting from the top left you can see a Gaufre de Bruxelles (Brussels waffle) which I tried on my food tour. It was okay I suppose, but not as nice as the waffle you can see in the bottom right picture. This one was perfectly warm, and covered in strawberries and cream. In the top right, you see a traditional Belgian dish that looks like Indian lamb curry. It is called “carbonnade” and it’s a beef stew. In the bottom left you can see another traditional Belgian dish called “moules marinière”, which is basically mussels in a white wine sauce with onions and celery.
Looking at all these images is just making me want to book a Eurostar train back to Belgium and pig out.
