Hamburg Germany Travel Diary

4.05 am
I’m on the coach on my way to the airport. I recently found out there are protests in Hamburg so I’m a little bit scared. What if my flight gets cancelled? and will I be safe out there? To be honest I didn’t even realise that I had booked a flight during the G20 summit. That’s probably the reason why it was so cheap. But it was only £20 and I am there for a day trip so it should be fine. I was contemplating between just leaving the ticket and not showing up. But a quick google search revealed that most airlines will charge you a “no show fee” if you don’t turn up for your flight.

11.30 am

I’m at the port of Hamburg eating “fischbrotchen”, which is a popular snack in Hamburg. All my photos are coming out hideous due to cloudy weather. I ate a prawn sandwich facing the sea. It was very tasty though! I can taste the freshness of the prawns. Anyway, my time here is limited I need to get up and explore.

5.30pm

I’m at the airport now. I tried to go into St. Nikolai’s memorial church/museum. Unfortunately, It was closed because of the G20 protests. My last chance was to try and go to the warehouse district and wander around the red canals. This failed because the riot police had blocked the entrance, and I somehow ended up in the middle of the protest. I sort of felt scared but a hint of excitement at the same time. I followed the protest for a while and then went back to the airport. So it looks like I pretty much unintentionally flew to Hamburg to eat a prawn sandwich and follow a protest. Hahaha! well at least the flights were only £20.

Feel free to check out my day trips to Cologne and Nuremberg.
