8 Hours In Cologne Germany

During the year after I graduated, I worked 4 days a week which meant that I had Tuesdays off. It was also a period when Ryanair was offering many cheap flights. During this period, I got to enjoy day trips to Madrid, Milan, Venice, Hamburg, Nuremberg, and Cologne. I managed to bag myself a £40 return flight on this occasion.

Cologne’s accessibility makes it a perfect destination for a day trip. You can reach the city centre from the airport within 15 minutes. So I hopped off my plane and straight onto the metro to Köln Hauptbahnhof.

I discovered this pretty fountain behind Cologne cathedral. Cologne is a medieval city and everything seems to be preserved. There are many areas that give you a mental picture of what the city could have looked like during those times.

The Chocolate Museum Cologne

It is a 20-minute walk along the river from the cathedral to The Chocolate Museum. Before starting my tour of the museum, I decided to have a rest and sip on some hot chocolate in the museum café.

Hohenzollern love lock bridge Cologne

After filling my bag with chocolate from the museum gift shop, I took a 20-minute stroll to Hohenzollern love lock bridge. It’s one of the most beautiful bridges that I have ever seen. The bridge is full of pretty padlocks.

I found a German fast food place in the main train station selling chips and Kölsch, which is the city’s local beer. I have noticed that some cities in Germany have actual local beers that represent them. I’m not a fan of beer…but I can tolerate the odd cup, Particularly when travelling to countries that specialise in beer.

I had a nice day in Cologne Germany. The locals are VERY friendly and the atmosphere was very nice. Feel free to also check out my day trips to Hamburg and Nuremberg.
