Copenhagen on a Budget

Copenhagen on a budget

Denmark is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. But that does not mean that you can’t enjoy it on a budget. I have been to Copenhagen twice and still managed to have a good time on a low budget. You must remember that the definition of a low budget in Scandinavia differs greatly from other European countries. The average price of 1 beer in Scandinavia is 10 euros…so you can only imagine how much a meal in a restaurant costs.

Nevertheless, there are many interesting things you can do which are free or do not cost much money. Whilst restaurants are expensive, there are many street food markets and some cheaper options available. Please take a look below at some ways you can enjoy Copenhagen on a budget.

Cheap things to do:

  1. Visit the Little Mermaid Statue (free)
  2. Visit Kastellet Fortress (free)
  3. Walk Along Nyhavn (free)
  4. Danish Design Museum (free for students or anyone under 26)
  5. Explore Christiana neighbourhood (free)
  6. Do a free walking tour
  7. Christiansborg Palace Tower (free)
  8. Climb the Rundetårn (40 DKK)
  9. See the changing of the guard ceremony at Amalienborg (free)

Cheap places to eat:

  1. Torvehallerne Market
  2. Netto (budget Danish supermarket)
  3. Folkehuset Absalon (50 DKK for a meal)
  4. Hot Dog Stands around the city (30 DKK for a hot dog)
  5. Domhusets Smørrebrød
  6. Riz Raz Buffet (119 DKK for lunch)
  7. Landbageriet
  8. Dürum Symfoni (cheap kebab and falafel)
  9. Grød (cheap cafe for breakfast)

Have a lovely time in Copenhagen and remember to dress warm! It’s funny because I went there during January for both of my visits. Before the second trip, my manager at the time said “don’t worry if your plane home gets cancelled because of the snow. Just text me” haha! in England we are a joke when it comes to handling the weather. Our trains and planes get cancelled whenever it snows. But in the rest of Europe life just goes on. On my way home I watched some hot water machines melting all of the snow from our plane and the runway before take-off.
