Marseille was included in the list of cheap flights on Ryanair’s website. So of course I booked myself a £25 return fare for 1 day in Marseille France. Marseille is beautiful but it does have a reputation for being the most dangerous city in France. I felt a negative shift in the atmosphere in the evening, so I went back to my hotel quite early. But I felt very safe during the daytime so it was fine 🙂
Palais Longchamp is absolutely beautiful and it was free to enter! It looks like the Trevi fountain in Rome has some competition. To be honest, I was really surprised that this attraction was empty. It was a Saturday and there were barely any tourists there. In a way, this is a good thing because it meant that I could peacefully absorb the atmosphere.
Have you noticed that I eat seafood everywhere I go? Marseille was no exception considering that it is a Mediterranean city on the coast. So of course I had to order moules frites and my usual “Monaco” beer that I love to have in France. It’s the most feminine beer you’ll ever get…because it tastes like sweets! It’s funny because my trip before this was to Portugal, where they charge you extra for the bread on your table. So when I asked the waitress how much the bread was, she looked confused and said “It’s free…this is France…we don’t charge for bread” She also gave me this crusty crouton thing with a black sauce for free (pictured above). I have no idea what it was…but it was delicious.
Soap seems to be the main souvenir in Marseille. They come in so many different flavours. I bought both olive oil and lavender soap. I feel that many souvenir shops in France don’t sell the authentic “savon de Marseille” soap. The olive oil one I bought didn’t even smell like olive oil…and my skin didn’t feel moisturised after using it. You would expect slippery smooth skin after using a product containing olive oil right? I should have done my research. But I can’t really complain it was only €2 per bar.
Vieux port…probably the most famous attraction in Marseille. This port looks absolutely beautiful! you can literally see a reflection of yourself in the water. It wasn’t as crowded as I thought it would be which is good. There are some restaurants and souvenir shops lined along this port.
Basilica of Notre-Dame of la Garde is a pretty stripe pattern church. I always love coming across unique looking churches when travelling, because many tend to look the same. I didn’t go inside as it appeared some kind of celebration had just taken place inside. The guests were all outside across the street. I had to wait a while for them to disperse before taking this photo.
I hope you enjoyed looking at some snippets of how I spent 1 day in Marseille France. Want to see more of my adventures in France? Then check out my trips to Bordeaux, Paris, and Toulouse.
Love this outline of how to spend a day in Marseille in France. I’ve always wanted to visit and this was helpful for a starting guide!
Marseille looks like a very pretty city. I didn’t go there when I was in Europe but now wish I had. Lucky you to get such a low fare that you can do it as a day trip
Unfortunately those fares don’t really exist any more since the global inflation 🙁 but yes I definitely made the most of it.
It’s incredible how you’ve packed so much exploring, history, and delicious food into a single day. Reminded me of my 1-day trip to Versailles, France. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
You’re welcome :). Yes I think many cities in Europe are small enough to do day or weekend trips. How was Versailles? I’ve never been there.
Sounds like a lovely trip. I have been meaning to plan this together with Nice and Monaco, will get around to it in the end 🙂
