My Top 5 Lisbon Tips

  1. In some countries, you are given free bread and butter with your meal at restaurants. Portugal is not one of those countries. Sometimes the waiter will put them on your table without asking, and you will see this added to your bill at the end. I have experienced this and seen other people complain about this. So please do double check with the waiter.

2. Cascais is a popular beach day trip destination for people from Lisbon. It is beautiful and I would recommend it, but it’s also very crowded and takes roughly an hour on the train to get there. There are other beaches closer to Lisbon that I discovered on my last trip. Carcavelos and Oeiras beaches take 20 minutes to reach by train from Lisbon (Cais do Sodre station).

3. Lisbon is a very hilly city and the streets are made of smooth cobblestones. for this reason, I would recommend wearing flat shoes with a good grip.

4. The best place to get a pastel de nata in Lisbon is Fábrica da Nata. Everything in here is soooo fresh and tastes good. Go early at 8am when the shop opens to see them being cooked from scratch.

5. There are many shops selling canned fish souvenirs, but you can buy them from the supermarket for less than half the price. The supermarket-branded canned fish is the same as the ones in souvenir shops. You just pay a marked-up price for the colourful patterned tins. I bought so many cans of cod, mussels, sardines, and squid from the supermarket.
